What people outside our industry may not realize is that copyright holders make big bucks suing violators. So they are constantly searching for violators. It was not very long ago that a filmmaker filmed Tony Romo's wedding and used a Coldplay song without permission. Rumor has it that he got fined a huge dollar amount. I think they ended up settling out of court, if I remember correctly. It was enough to convince me to buy licensed music tracks for my work every time. It really is not too much either. I bought a package of 100 tracks for less than thirty bucks recently.
